Salmeterol and salbutamol impair the clearance of NTHi from lungs. Mice inhaled salmeterol or salbutamol before intranasal inoculation with 107 CFU NTHi. Some mice were intraperitoneally injected with propranolol (10 mg/kg every 2 hours). A, Salmeterol inhibited bacterial clearance in infected lungs 24 and 48 h post-challenge. B, The effect of salmeterol on bacterial clearance 24 hours post-infection was mimicked by salbutamol and antagonized by propranolol. * p < 0.05 versus vehicle.
