Representative images of the airway wall stained with periodic acid-Schiff to quantify the mucin-containing goblet cells. Histologic sections were accessed at 4 and 24 h after smoke inhalation injury. (Magnification, 400×). There was an increase in the amount of PAS-stained cells (purple-magenta color) in the small airway epithelium in the wild type mice. However, there was only minimal or no PAS staining in the mice of the control group, JNK -/- group, or JNK inhibitor treated group.
